Located in the southeastern state of Georgia in the United States, Atlanta is a hot bed of activity and attractions, something that makes it one of the country’s most popular cities.
Visitors planning a trip to Atlanta by air can expect to arrive at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest airport. Located about 11km south of Downtown Atlanta, the airport is readily accessible thanks to shuttle buses, taxis, and public transport.
The city itself is awash with historical significance, having played an important role in the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement. As such, visitors will find an assortment of historical landmarks and attractions. These include the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historical Site, where the influential activist was born; the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum, which features a stunning cylindrical painting of the Battle of Atlanta; and the Atlanta History Center.
The city is also home a wealth of other museums, including the Fernback Museum of Natural History, the High Museum of Art Atlanta, and the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, which was home to the Gone with the Wind author.
Not everything in Atlanta revolves around history. In fact, some of the city’s most popular tourist destinations are smack bang in the middle of the here and now. The World of Coca-Cola offers exhibits relating to the world-famous soft drink, which is headquartered in the city. Tours of CNN Center, the home of the famed television news network, also prove popular, as does Centennial Olympic Park, which was created for the 1996 Summer Olympics held in the city.
Families working out their Atlanta trip plan may wish to include the likes of Zoo Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium, or one of the Six Flags amusement parks (Over Georgia and White Water) located in or around the city. The Varsity, meanwhile, is the largest drive-in in the world, regularly showing movies and sporting events, and an ideal destination for all visitors.
