Arles (Provençal Occitan: Arle in both classical and Mistralian norms) is a city and commune in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, of which it is a subprefecture, in the former province of Provence (...) (from Wikipedia).
When the Romans built their amphitheater and network of shaded streets, they laid the foundation for a picturesque city that has barely changed over the last 2000 years. Narrow streets, plane trees and painted wooden shutters, combined with a passion for bullfighting, make for an intoxicating atmosphere. Arles seduced Vincent Van Gogh and if you get the feeling that you’ve been here before, perhaps you have, through some of his most famous work.
