The Royal Palace in Amsterdam (or Paleis op de Dam ) is one of four palaces in the Netherlands which is at the disposal of Queen Beatrix by Act of Parliament. The palace was built as city hall during the Dutch Golden Age in the seventeenth century (...) (from Wikipedia).
The palace was built in the 17th century, Amsterdam's heyday as a world trading center. It was established as City Hall in a time when Amsterdam was considered a powerful country. The palace was designed by architect Jacob Van Campen. It stands on 13,259 columns, in order to improve its stability on the city's difficult ground. The entire structure is amazingly ornamented and projects great power. In 1808, it was first used as a palace for King Louis, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. Since then, it never returned to its original use, and was purchased by the Holland Government. Although this is the current queen's official residence, she lives in Hague and only comes to the palace for ceremonial events.
