The KNSM Island is a man-made peninsula in the Eastern Docklands
of Amsterdam. It is named for the Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot-Maatschappij
(KNSM), the Royal Dutch Steamboat Shipping company which used to have its
headquarters and its docks on the island (...).(From Wikipedia).
The eastern islands were used by Dutch boating companies until the mid 70s. They were artificially constructed between 1902 and 1930. Freight and passenger ships arriving in Amsterdam docked in the islands, and the buildings constructed on them were used as boating company warehouses. In 1977, the port's docks were moved to the western part of Amsterdam, and the eastern area became neglected. Between 1987 and 2003, 8000 new houses were built in Java, KNSM, the Sporenburg Peninsula and the Borneo Island, almost all homes. These buildings joined dozens of old port structures in preservation. The old buildings are mainly used as shopping centers and clubs. An old prison in Sporenburg became one of the most famous luxury hotels in Amsterdam today – Lloyd. Boat owners who anchored here in the islands' tough times were surprisingly encouraged, and the municipality is now asking them to continue to anchor along the docks, in order to maintain the port's character.
