The Alhambra (Al-Ḥamrā' , literally 'the red one'), the complete form of which was Calat Alhambra (الْقَلْعَةُ ٱلْحَمْرَاءُ, Al-Qal‘at al-Ḥamrā’ , 'the red fortress'), is a palace and fortress complex constructed during the mid 14th century by the Moorish rulers of the Emirate of Granada in (...) (from Wikipedia).
The Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens next to it are considered to be one of the most interesting and beautiful sites in Europe. The palace and gardens present Muslim Architecture at its best. When Alhambra was built in Granada, in the 14th century, the Muslim-Moorish period in Spain was at its peak. The palace was originally built as a fortress, intended to defend the city, and it is located on a high hill above the Darro River, overlooking the surroundings area. The modern city of Granada is located on the opposite bank of the river, about one kilometer away from the palace. When you reach the Alhambra Palace, it is not surprising if you feel disappointed. Its external appearance is a little stark, and is not very impressive. You should remember that all of the site's wonders are inside it. Its external appearance does not show that. There is a large impressive garden complex around the palace, with courtyards, churches and halls. You should give this visit at least four hours. The Alhambra is a recognized UNESCO world heritage site, and its preservation is meticulously kept. This meticulousness also means that the daily number of visitors to the site is restricted. The quota is currently 8,800 visitors per day. This means that approximately three-quarters of the tickets are obtained  in the presale. In winter (January to mid-March), there is usually no problem to buy tickets at the ticket booths as well. At other times, you should prepare in advance, and buy your tickets in advance by phone or through the internet. The Alhambra consists of three parts. The royal palace – Casa Real, the Generalife Gardens and La Alcazaba – the fortress which was the first building on the hill and which gave, due to the reddish bricks it is made of, the entire complex its famous name (In Arabic, Alhambra means 'the Red Fortress').The most pleasant surprise in a contemporary visit to Alhambra, is that it is possible, thanks to the space, size and numerous halls, gardens and courtyards, to really soak in the Muslim grandeur and serenity, which we now mostly imagine. The One Thousand and One Nights sceneries can still be felt in Granada. In Alhambra it is possible to understand what the concept of heaven is, according to the Quran. Green, symmetrical gardens, leading to the center, where water abounds, cultivation of shadow, cool colonnades of pillars surrounding closed courtyards – all of these are evidence to the advantages of architects who came from desert regions, and saw Granada as the direct continuation of Africa, rather than a European city.
