Top Attractions in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities, and a place I’ve visited many times. If you’re
Planning a trip to Amsterdam
in the near future check out my list of top attractions – they guarantee you a memorable day or two in this laid back Dutch city.
No one traveling to Amsterdam should miss out a visit to Anne Frank House, the brave Jewish girl who famously wrote a diary while in hiding from the Nazis. Her former home is now a museum dedicated to her life – and to the lives of many others who have suffered discrimination.
There are a number of good museums in Amsterdam, but one of the best is the Van Gogh Museum where you can view an impressive collection of the impressionist’s works. There are also paintings and drawings by some of his contemporaries on display – including works by Monet, Gauguin and Toulouse Lautrec. The museum is located just outside the city, a short trip on a tram from the city center.
Another museum I would put high on the list of attractions is the Rembrandt Museum – there are over 250 works by the Dutch master on display here, including etchings, and a collection of his private possessions.
If you’re bringing the family then here’s one for the kids: Madame Tussauds Amsterdam is home to some strikingly real wax figures – many of whom will be familiar to the home crowd. If you’re not Dutch you probably won’t recognize them, but since many are important figures in the county’s past, this acts as a great introduction to Dutch history. If you want to dodge the lines it pays to book ahead.
If you’re feeling extravagant, a trip to the Amsterdam Diamond Center could be in order to check out the shops which are packed with sparkling jewels. Alternatively if you fancy some downtime at little cost head for Amsterdam’s Public Library- a great place to spend a rainy afternoon is the rooftop café which offers you spectacular city views and free internet access.
These are just a few of my favorite places in Amsterdam – I hope you bear these in mind next time you find yourself
Planning a trip to Amsterdam
– I’m sure you will find plenty more to add to the list.
